Baker scores first goal for Whitecaps youth on German tour

Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency continued their winning ways during their two-week trip to Germany, as they defeated the U-19 Junior Bundesliga side of FC Energie Cottbus 3-1 on Saturday.

Building on Wednesday’s 2-0 win over FSV Optik Rathenow, Thomas Niendorf’s side jumped out to a two-goal halftime lead following strikes from Ontario’s Jerome Baker and Alex Semenets on a warm and sunny spring afternoon in eastern Germany. Jamaican youngster Keithy Simpson struck early in the second half for the ‘Caps before Cottbus scored a late consolation goal in the friendly contest. Saturday’s result was particularly notable, as Niendorf gave no less than six U-17 players a run out against their German hosts.

Whitecaps open season with scoreless draw

Canadian youth international Marcus Haber made his ‘Caps debut after spending the last two years in the Netherlands and showed well in Vancouver Whitecaps 0-0 season opening draw with Charleston at Burnaby, B.C.’s Swangard Stadium.
Haber, one of several young Canadians the Whitecaps are dressing this season, hit the post in the 14th minute.

Toronto’s Jerome Baker, 17, a product of the Sigma FC development system, was dressed for the game but did not factor in the result.
